Mathematics in the Richmond School District

Mathematics is a broad discipline that involves creative and critical thinking and problem-solving. Although many parents are familiar with the arithmetic component of mathematics, content areas also included in mathematics learning in BC include patterning and algebraic thinking, measurement and geometry, probability, financial literacy and data analysis. Many of these areas are explored through tasks involving materials. To experience some of the math materials used in Richmond classrooms, we invite families to visit our district’s Math Play Space. Teachers in BC are required to teach, assess and communicate student learning based on the grade level learning standards in the mathematics curriculum. The redesigned K-9 curriculum has been in place since September 2016 and the new grades 10-12 courses are in place as of September 2019. The curriculum is available to view here where you can select the grade level/s you are interested in:
